Gone with the Wind

Author Margaret Mitchell;
Synopsis I was told this is a love story, and I detest reading them. Had to start reading this because was marooned and had only this book to rescue. I was pleasantly surprised to see the intensity of the book. Such an intense book which carries everything which makes it an epic and rather a fiction in my terms. I don't know if the impressions of Scarlett O Hara, Rhett Butler, Melanie, Ashlay, Gerald, Ellen, Mammy, Peter I will ever be able to remove them from my mind. And I won't say its a love story, its a period retold "the American Civil War".
I rather leave it for you to read then say more.

The City of Joy

Author Dominique Lapierre;
Synopsis Had heard about the controversies regarding the book, but the book to me is a complete masterpiece. I being Indian can vow for the veracity of events. It surely does happen. Author knows more about India than some elite Indians. Good book, the message though is little hazy. Its not that the poor people are happy and content with their pathetic life, its that they don't have much options, so they learnt to live with it.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven

Author Mitch Albom;
Synopsis An easy and fast read, some very good insights. All in all an okay book. People have compared it with "Chritmas Carol", but I think that was a masterpiece, this is mediocre. But we don't expect classics now. I like the setting of the whole story. I liked this as I liked "Tuesdays with Morrie".

It's Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life

Author Lance Armstrong; Sally Jenkins;
Synopsis Gripping, will educate you about the bike (bicycle) and finally and most importantly will tell you that anybody and anybody can get any disease at any time, no matter how physically fit he seems. The Calcutta Chromosome: A Novel of Fevers, Delirium & Discovery

Author Amitav Ghosh;
Synopsis Don't know how a person can do such great research and come up with something which is so different. A lot of research effort have been put to bring this up. I am not sure about the veracity of medical events and the IMS people (cunnigham ....) mentioned in the book, but it certainly makes an interesting read. One of a kind. I know it must take lots of brain to weave such a masterpiece, but I don't know if there is any other weaver of the ilk of Mr. Ghosh.

I have never read something like this before. Read Amitav for the first time and have already become his fan.

The Inheritance of Loss

Author Kiran Desai;
Synopsis This is one of the books, which I read just because it got a booker. The other three were "Vernon God Little", "Life of Pi" and "God of small things".
What you can look out for, in this book
(a) The meaning of the title. It seems everybody is gloomy and nobody gets what he wants.
(b) The reason of irrational behaviour of some people, though you won't get the reason in clear terms. But you would surely know some people are irrational and don't know whether you can blame them for it or not.
(c) The GNLF problem, what bare minimum it takes to instigate people.
(d) The problem of third world countries illegal immigrants in US.
(e) How to weave parallel stories, giving all characters equal importance.

For me it was diffcult to understand the plot till the first 100 pages, but then surely the story progresses.
At the end of the book, I quite understood what it takes to get a BOOKER.
